Surprises
Buffy was lightly dozing in the hospital chair when Willow came in.
“Hey Buffy.”
“Hey.”
“How is he?”
“He’s sleeping and his breathing seems to be normal, but he hasn’t woken up yet. Spike and the doctor both seem to think he’ll be fine.”
“Speaking of, where is he?
“I sent him to take Anya home.”
“They seem to be pretty close lately.”
“Yeah, they do.” Buffy paused, and then asked, “Have you found out anything about those Angora demons?”
“Anhkora demons Buffy, they’re not fuzzy sweaters.”
“Angora, Anhkora. Are they poisonous or magic or anything?”
“No, they seem to be your basic bloodthirsty monster types. Most people die from blood loss and, ahem, flesh loss.”
“Ewww.”
“You said it sister.”
“Well, I’ll let you take your shift in the comfy chair then. I guess I’ll get cleaned up and return Anya’s car keys. Spike must have hotwired the car or something.” Buffy shook her head. “Oh, and Willow?”
“Hmmm?”
“For God’s sake don’t forget to call Anya the second he wakes up.”
“Don’t worry, I’m not wanting to risk Anyanka. Hey, do you want my car keys?”
“Nah, the walk will do me good.”
Buffy whistled while she walked. She could feel the stress of the evening melting away. Xander was going to be fine. She decided to go ahead and return Anya’s keys as her and Xander’s house was closer than her home on Revello Drive. She really liked the little ranch house that they had decided to buy over the summer. She kept expecting them to announce an engagement but that still hadn’t happened. She saw Xander’s car in the driveway ahead and could see Spike and Anya talking through the picture window. Anya began crying and Spike leaned forward and took her in his arms. ‘Wow,’ thought Buffy, ‘he really can be sweet when he wants to be.’ She decided to wait before interrupting. What she saw next shocked her to her core.
Anya raised her tear-stained face to Spike’s and kissed him passionately on the lips. He paused, drew back for a moment and began kissing her back. It was as if a storm was unleashed. Anya began pulling his leather jacket off his shoulders. He helped by shrugging it off. He put his face in her neck and moaned. He stood and pulled his tee shirt off quickly as she did the same. They sank to the couch and began kissing again. Spike kissed his way to Anya’s neck, pausing to suck and nibble at her jugular. Anya moaned and ran her hands down Spike’s bare back. He moved down her neck and buried his face between her breasts as he reach behind her and undid her bra. As her bra fell away he began running his thumbs around her nipples tracing the areolas. Anya moaned and pushed his head to the side. He began licking then sucking at her nipples alternately. She threw her head back and tightened her fingers in his hair. He reached out and started undoing her pants. She helped by wriggling out of them then lifted her knee between his legs. Spike moaned then sat up, unlaced his boots, and pulled off his own jeans. Spike leaned forward again kissed Anya while reaching between her legs.
“Spike,” Anya gasped, “now!”
Spike nodded, removed his hand, grabbed each of her thighs, spread her legs and with what appeared to be a practiced move, plunged quickly into her.
They both moaned loudly, not hearing Buffy’s own gasp. Unknowingly she had crept closer until she was practically at the window. She knew she should be barging in and stopping them but she was totally caught up in the scene playing out before her. Her skin was clammy and her breaths were coming in shallow bursts matching the breathing of the two lovers in front of her. Worse than that, she could feel heat and wetness pooling between her legs. As Anya reached the beginning of her climax her hands gripped the couch, Buffy’s own hands clenched at her sides.
“Argh!”
“Oh God Spike I love you!”
“I love you too Anya!”
Panting, they climaxed. Spike put his forehead on Anya’s. She briefly closed her eyes, and tearfully looked up at Spike, “I love Xander so much.”
“I know, I love him too.”
Buffy lost her balance and fell on her ass. By the time Spike and Anya covered themselves and looked out the window she was running toward Revello Drive.
“Omigod, omigod, omigod,” Buffy chanted. “Spike and Anya had sex. Spike and Anya love each other. Spike and Anya love Xander. Spike loves Xander? And…” She stopped suddenly. “Did that whole thing just turn me on?”
By the time she had reached the house Buffy was totally confused. Who could she talk to? Willow would kill Anya. Giles would kill Spike. Xander would… What would Xander do? She shook her head. She needed a shower and some sleep. She would be able to think better in the morning.

Laughter
It was laughter that started it all. It was laughter that startled Buffy out of her reverie. They had been fruitlessly researching the latest monster of the week and she had started to zone out when the sound of Anya’s laughter rang out. Buffy turned her head and saw a grinning Spike in his black leather jacket and black tee and jeans ensemble leaning over the counter to Anya whispering something into her ear with a grin.
“Jeez,” she muttered, “he looks like a 50’s hoodlum chatting up the counter girl at the soda shop.”
Xander looked up and grinned at her analogy, “Well, they were both alive during the 50’s.”
“They’re probably exchanging disembowelment tips,” she said shaking her head.
Xander only smiled fondly.
Now that she thought about it, Buffy hadn’t heard Anya laugh genuinely and unselfconsciously in a long time. She hadn’t seen Xander smile so warmly either. And she was pretty sure she hadn’t seen Spike smile so non-evilly at anyone other than Dawn. Everyone had seemed kind of down since the end of the battle with Glory. It had taken a lot of their usual verve. “Well I am tired of reading, anyone want to go patrol?”
Seven heads popped up at once and seven voices rang out simultaneously with an “I do.”
Buffy grinned, “patrol party?”
“Better than a research party,” replied Xander.
“Hey!” Giles, Willow, and Dawn exclaimed.
“Don’t get offended. Besides, you all wanted to patrol too,” said Buffy.
“One’s neck does tend to become stiff after a while; some physical exertion would be welcome,” said Giles.
“What he said,” smiled Dawn.
“Okay, we should probably split up. Spike, you go with Xander and Anya, Willow you come with me and Dawn.”
“I’ll go with Xander and Anya too,” said Tara.
“Honey,” Willow whined.
“No, your girl’s right, you two witchiepoos should be separated just in case we need some mojo,” said Spike.
“Giles?”
“I suppose I’ll accompany you, Buffy. I haven’t seen you fight with anything other than Spike for a while, I should critique your technique.”
“Eh, I’m standing right here.”
“Stop it you two. Cell phones on vibrate?”
“Check.”
“Let’s go.”
Later in Sunnydale’s main cemetery, Buffy and Giles had staked a couple of vampires each and were deciding to fetch the other crew and call it a night when they heard a scream from the other side of the cemetery. “Spike!”
“That was Anya,” said Giles.
They all started running in the direction of the noise. Buffy got there just in time to see Spike pick up Xander and run. “Anya! What happened? Where is Spike going with Xander?”
“He’s taking him to Sunnydale General,” sobbed Anya. “Oh God, there’s so much blood…”
“We figured it would be fastest,” babbled Tara. “I mean I can’t teleport yet and Anya can’t do it anymore and Oh God Buffy it was awful.”
“I have to go to him now!”
“Anya calm down and let Tara tell us what happened,” ordered Giles.
“I won’t calm down, I have to go now, you can stay here and figure it out all you want. I need to see if Xander’s okay. You didn’t see…”
“It’s okay Giles, I’ll take her to the hospital. You get everyone home and start figuring out what got him and if there’s anything special we need to know. I’ll call as soon as we know something.”
During the ride to the hospital, Buffy wished she were the comforting type. Out the corner of her eye she watched Anya quietly sobbing in the passenger’s seat. “Anya? Do you feel okay enough to tell me what happened?”
Anya sniffled and wiped away some tears with the back of her hand. “Stupid Xander. Spike was fine, but he had to jump in. Damn it! Doesn’t he know how fragile humans are?”
“Okay, Spike was fighting a…what?”
“An Ahnkorak demon.”
“Uh, huh. And…?”
“Tara was chanting some kind of stasis spell to disable it and stupid Xander jumped in with a broadsword to quote ‘back Spike up’. Stupid, stupid, stupid!” Her voice rose to a shriek, “can’t you drive any faster?”
“Calm down, we’re almost there. I think it was very brave.”
“Of course it was brave, that’s what’s so stupid. He’s only a human and I’d die if I lost him.”
“Don’t worry, he’ll be okay.”
“You can’t know that.”
“No I can’t.”
“You’re not very good at this.”
“No I’m not.” ‘Good,’ Buffy thought, ‘Blunt Anya is back, that means she’s calming down.’ “Look, we’re here.”
Anya jumped out of the car and ran inside before Buffy had a chance to come to a complete stop. “I guess I’ll meet you inside” Buffy said to the air where Anya had been. Despite her seeming calm, Buffy was worried about Xander, so she found a parking space and jogged the apparent mile to the hospital.
By the time she had found the information desk, got Xander’s room number, and walked down the hall, she could hear Anya and Spike whispering in a heated debate.
“Anyanka, I told you, he’s going to be fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes” he hissed.
“But if he wasn’t you’d do it right?”
“But he’s going to be fine, so I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Spike, if it ever came down to it, promise me you’d do it.”
“This is not a discussion I want to have right now, besides it is not my decision to make, nor yours.”
“Spike, I can’t lose him. We can’t lose him.”
“He wouldn’t be the same.”
“We can fix that.”
“Anya, we will talk about this later. All of us. For now, be content with the fact that he’s going to be okay.”
“I’m not letting this go.”
“Letting go of what?” Buffy interjected.
“Nothing, Slayer, Demon Girl here is worrying needlessly. The Doughboy is going to be fine. He’s lost some blood is all.”
“Are you sure?”
“Trust me on this one Slayer. Vampire, remember? I do have some experience in this field.”
“Touché.”
“Would you two stop flirting? We have a sick man here.”
Buffy and Spike turned and stared at Anya. She looked miserable and bloody. Buffy’s irritation melted away. “Spike will you take Anya home and let her get cleaned up and get some rest? Willow’s on the way, I’ll hold down the fort until then and check up on the research. If he wakes up before you both return Willow will call, okay?”
Anya looked longingly at Xander’s still form and nodded her assent. Spike grasped her elbow and steered her out the door. Buffy once again wondered about their relationship. He seemed to be the only one besides Xander that really got along with Anya.

Dawn: I have to. Look at what's happening.
More lightning crackles, even larger than before. Buffy looks up. A huge dragon flies out of the portal and buzzes the tower, flying away as they watch.
Dawn: Buffy, you have to let me go. Blood starts it, and until the blood stops flowing, it'll never stop.

Dawn: Buffy ... no!
Buffy: Dawnie, I have to.
Dawn: No!
Buffy: Listen to me. Please, there's not a lot of time, listen.
The camera pulls out on the two of them. Buffy holds Dawn by the upper arms and continues talking to her: Dawn, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will *always* love you. But this is the work that I have to do. Tell Giles ... tell Giles I figured it out. And, and I'm okay. And give my love to my friends.
You have to take care of them now. You have to take care of each other.
You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world ... is to live in it.
Be brave. Live. For me.
Dawn begins to cry. Lightning continues to crackle behind them.
Cut back to close shot of Buffy. She strokes the side of Dawn's face, then kisses her on the cheek. Dawn continues to cry.
Buffy turns. In slow-motion, she runs down the platform as Dawn stays there crying.
Buffy swan-dives off the end of the platform and into the portal.
Dawn watches, sobbing.
Below Anya looks up and sees the beginning of Buffy’s dive, “Spike!”
Spike looks up and despite his pain rises and runs, leaps with supernatural speed and catches Buffy in his arms. They collapse to the ground.
